ITOGON, Benguet –- The long standing boundary dispute of the town and Tuba will finally be settled.
The boundary dispute involves the areas between Ampucao and Camp 3 of Tuba. Eddie Amuasen is the barangay chairman of Ampucao.
Councilor Gerard Cornel revealed to the council last Tuesday he received a joint settlement agreement between the two barangays. He said the barangays came up with a settlement scheme which could benefit the two towns.
Cornel expressed he is happy to hear from the two barangays on the issue. He thanked the barangays for initiating the settlement.
However, he refused to divulge the details of the agreement because they will still discuss it during their regular session next week. He said they still need to check if the settlement agreement is beneficial to both towns.
The present boundary dispute of Tuba and the town caused a lot of delay for the Philex Mining Corporation to pay its due tax to the two towns. Officials of the town earlier claimed the corporation had been using the dispute as a reason not to pay its accumulated tax.
The joint settlement agreement, one the council will approve it, might settle the payment of the accumulated tax of Philex Mining Corporation, too.
These two towns had been calling the attention of the mining company to pay its taxes to both but until now, no amount was collected.
