ITOGON, Benguet – The legislative body rejected the Municipal Development Council’s (MDC) proposal to rehabilitate the gymnasium instead of constructing a new building.
The MDC chaired by Mayor Oscar Camantiles passed Resolution 8, series of 2012 titled, “Resolution Realigning Funds from the Construction of Multipurpose Building to the Improvement of Municipal Gymnasium in Poblacion in the Amount of P10 Million.”
Vice Mayor Noel Ngolob questioned the realignment of the huge amount for rehabilitation only. He said the town is a 1st class municipality and yet, it does not have a separate legislative building. “We are only sharing this building with other departments, compared to other municipalities wherein even a 4th and 5th class municipalities have their separate legislative building.”
Ngolob said that to have a multipurpose building is a dream to most of his colleagues. This is primarily the reason why the council rejected the realignment. The vice mayor said they identified this dream as a priority project and appropriated P10 million for the purpose.
“What I don’t understand is why would they realign this budget when it is already approved as a priority project? As stated by some councilors, the municipal gymnasium is still usable.”
Ngolob added that the situation is similar with various road rehabilitations of the Department of Public Works and Highways on still good and passable roads in the country.
Meanwhile, MDC Liga president and council member Daniel said the decision is okay with him because the resolution was presented to the council for discussion. He added the matter might not clear to the council because he admitted not explaining it.
Daniel revealed the plan for the gymnasium is to create bleachers on both sides and will construct offices below these bleachers.
